Transformation: How Will You Change?

Transformation literally means to change form. Transformation occurs by choice or by chaos. We choose to change or something happens that forces change upon us. It is the same with the world. Either people initiate change or something happens to force us in a different direction. And when the latter happens – change we did not initiate and cannot control – our lives are thrown into chaos.

Chaos occurs when a system breaks apart. The energy within the system can no longer be contained within its boundaries. Imagine a glass being filled with water. If the water isn’t shut off before it reaches the rim of the glass, it will overflow. The water will take an unrecognizable form as it spreads beyond the boundaries of the glass. But we can control this upset. The water can be turned off; the mess cleaned up. Next time, we may get a bigger glass or be more attentive to the water flowing into the glass. We don’t feel threatened. We’re still in control.

Now fill the glass with water to the brim and then freeze it. The ice cannot overflow so it must break through the walls containing it. The glass explodes and pieces fly everywhere. There is a mess, destruction, possibly irreparable damage. That is transformation by chaos.

Chaos results in there is disorder, confusion, turmoil. It is the precursor to a quantum leap. A quantum leap is a change from one state to another. In other words, a transformation. Out of the chaos energy transforms into a new order, a different state.

Right now the world – and just about everyone in it – is experiencing chaos. Business, education, entertainment, life as we knew it is changing. It is changing rapidly, dramatically. People feel lost, confused, frightened, powerless and angry.

How do you feel? How has your life changed? How have you changed? How will you change?

Change has been forced upon us but we need not feel hopeless. We can and we will emerge into a new and – eventually – better system. The old ways were not working.

Whether it be the economy, environment, education, entertainment, immigration, food, health and well-being, things are not working.

The world has changed and we need to change.

There are 7.8 billion in the world today. It was only 2.477 when I was born in 1946. With 3 times more people, we cannot expect the systems that worked in the 40s and 50s to be sufficient to the needs of today.

“Our population is expected to grow to 10 billion by the end of this century but the capacity of our environment to provide space, produce food, and supply energy are limited.”

We have to change but we resist change.

Therefore it has been forced upon us. We can fight it every step of the way by complaining and unleashing angry feelings on one another, the police, the government. We can bemoan our fate and feel like victims. That will only prolong the agony and the recovery.

How can you use this unprecedented time to change yourself, your lifestyle, your relationships, your values. How can you use this time to become more than who you were before?

If you don’t like the government, stop complaining and start campaigning. Vote.

If you don’t want to wear a mask, think of your neighbors instead of yourself and put a mask on.

If you can’t go to church, use the time for a one on one with God.

If your disappointed about missing special events, create new ones. Like what, you ask. Instead of high proms and graduation parties, offer to mentor students in lower grades who are having difficulty with home schooling.

If you are worried about the environment and climate change, get involved with groups doing something about it like Green Peace or Sierra Club.

What has befallen us in 2020 is not a disaster. It’s an opportunity.
